2024 Reproductive Justice Conference Zines
Zines, short for fanzines or magazines, are self-published materials that individuals create to share their thoughts, ideas, and interests on a wide range of topics. They are typically produced using a DIY approach, often using photocopiers or printers for distribution.
These publications can cover diverse subjects such as art, literature, music, politics, or personal anecdotes. Zines are known for their grassroots nature and often serve as a platform for self-expression, creative freedom, and community-building.
With roots in alternative and punk subcultures, zines have evolved over time to embrace digital formats alongside traditional printed versions. They offer a counterbalance to mainstream media by providing a space for marginalized voices, niche interests, and unconventional perspectives.
Overall, zines play a vital role in fostering creativity, fostering connections, and offering individuals a medium to share their unique stories with the world.
Duke’s 2024 Reproductive Justice Conference in March focused on black maternal health. In one of the sessions, student were provided with the opportunity to make Zines reflecting on their experience at the conference. We are excited to share the accumulation of these pieces:
